Individual Healthcare Insurance and Family Health Insurance Plans:
Well it looks like it is official, United Healthcare is withdrawing from the personal health insurance market. They floated a trial balloon several months ago, just to see what reaction would be. Now Blue Cross of Arizona, probably will not be in the individual health market this fall during open enrollment, they advent announce anything as of yet except that they are still trying to decide. There was an article in Forbes magazine two months ago and Humana was also looking at dropping the individual and family health care plans as well and as of 2 weeks ago Humana has officialy announced that this is going to happen and they will not be participating as well. There are only a few of the health insurance co-ops still in operation but the few left in business are all hemorrhaging cash as well. We had one named Merits here in Arizona but it only operated for two years. They went out last fall. These were the government supported answer to the for profit insurance carriers. I am not sure why we needed these since it is illegal for pre-existing conditions to not be covered and the only health related question allowed was do you smoke? So there were fewer companies to work with in the 2016 open enrollment period and there will be significantly less in 2017. Not sure who will be in the market in fall?
Most people are un aware, BUT after the last open enrollment period, all the insurance carriers decided not to pay agents (me) commissions for helping people through this confusing time. Commissions weren't much, 2-4 % but we could justify this if we had clients with Home Insurance and Auto Insurance with us as well. So there is another increase to you the consumer that no one is telling you about. So now we have had to add fees to help you with your individual health shopping and policy support. The sky may be falling, but we will see what is available to the public come November for 2017 and let you know at that time. What if there are no companies willing to write Individual Health Insurance or Family Insurance plans in Arizona for open enrollment 2017? Will all those people who have individual coverage plans be dropped so all of us will have to pay a penalty for not having an ACA qualified Health Insurance plan BUT there are no plans we can even get?
Should be fun this fall. I am constantly looking for options for everyone and am exploring an individual plan that does not qualify as an ACA plan, but it is still health coverage. More to come on that. Also more to come on how to opt out of the Accountable Health Care Penalties coming. Also developing a penalty tax calculator to use for those that say Good Bye Health Coverage. Again this is in the works.
